Virtual Antenna Array With Directional Antennas for Millimeter-Wave Channel Characterization

Millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) band channel modeling and characterization are essential for system design analysis in the fifth generation (5G) future communication systems. Reliable sounding deployment scenarios is required accurate realistic characterization. In state of art, directional scanning (DSS) virtual antenna array (VAA) two popular methods due to their simplicity cost-effectiveness. The DSS VAA typically based on mechanically rotatable antennas movable omnidirectional antennas, respectively. However, spatial resolution limited by directivity high sidelobes used method. conventional method also has limitations terms low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) unavailability suitable that support mmWave (above 60 GHz) measurements wideband horizontal polarization measurements. this article, a novel antenna-based framework combination with associated beamforming algorithm proposed. Compared state-of-the-art methods, proposed can achieve angular SNR mm-Wave without introducing additional cost measurement time. Furthermore, it generic solution be applicable arbitrary frequency bands polarizations, unlike To validate effectiveness robustness method, experiments (a clean anechoic chamber indoor meeting room) were conducted over 28–30 GHz types (i.e., horn corrugated antenna).
